Is Band 9 really achievable, or just for native speakers?

Does my handwriting affect my Writing score?

The bigger handwriting risk is wasted time: messy writers often re-write sentences instead of pushing forward. On computer-delivered IELTS this is a non-issue.

Will writing fewer than 250 / 150 words actually cost me marks?

Yes — meaningfully. The fixed word-count penalty was officially removed in 2018, but examiners still apply Task Achievement deductions because under-length essays can't fully address the prompt. Realistic impact: a 230-word Task 2 essay typically caps at Band 6 in Task Achievement regardless of quality. Aim for 270–290 (Task 2) and 165–185 (Task 1). What if I go blank or pause too long during Speaking?
