UK Visa IELTS Requirements: Which Test Do You Actually Need?

IELTS Academic, General Training, or IELTS for UKVI? The wrong test means your application gets rejected. Here is which test you need for each UK visa type.

#Understanding UK Visa English Language Requirements

The UK visa system has some of the most confusing English language requirements of any country. There are multiple IELTS tests, different CEFR levels for different visas, and strict rules about which test centres are acceptable. This guide cuts through the confusion.

#The Three Types of IELTS for UK Visas

#1. IELTS Academic / General Training (Standard)

The regular IELTS test that most people know. Accepted for Tier 4 / Student visas at universities that are their own "A-rated sponsor." Most UK universities accept standard IELTS for degree-level courses. This is the most widely available and cheapest option.

#2. IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training)

Identical in format and difficulty to standard IELTS, but taken at an approved SELT (Secure English Language Test) centre with additional security measures (biometric verification, video recording). Required when:

  • Applying for a Student visa to a university that is NOT an A-rated sponsor
  • Applying for a Student visa for below-degree-level courses
  • The Home Office specifically requests a SELT
  • Applying for a Skilled Worker visa

#3. IELTS Life Skills (A1, A2, or B1)

A completely different test — only Speaking and Listening, lasting about 20 minutes. Used exclusively for:

  • Life Skills A1: Spouse/Partner visa (initial application)
  • Life Skills A2: Extension of family visas
  • Life Skills B1: Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and British citizenship

#CEFR Levels and IELTS Score Mapping

UK visas specify requirements using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Here is how IELTS maps to CEFR:

  • A1 = IELTS 2.0–3.0 (Life Skills A1 pass)
  • A2 = IELTS 3.0–3.5 (Life Skills A2 pass)
  • B1 = IELTS 4.0–5.0 (Life Skills B1 pass, or IELTS for UKVI 4.0+ in each module)
  • B2 = IELTS 5.5–6.5 (typically 5.5 or 6.0 minimum in each component)
  • C1 = IELTS 7.0–8.0
  • C2 = IELTS 8.5–9.0

#Requirements by Visa Type

#Skilled Worker Visa (formerly Tier 2)

Level required: B1 (IELTS 4.0 in each component)

You must take IELTS for UKVI (not standard IELTS) or another approved SELT. The requirement is modest — B1 in Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. However, you are exempt if you:

  • Are a national of a majority English-speaking country
  • Have a degree taught in English (with confirmation from UK ENIC)

#Student Visa (formerly Tier 4)

Level required: B2 (typically IELTS 5.5–6.5 depending on the course)

For degree-level courses, most universities set their own requirements (usually IELTS 6.0–7.0 overall with no band below 5.5–6.5). For below-degree courses, you need IELTS for UKVI at B2 level. Universities that are A-rated sponsors can accept standard IELTS; others require IELTS for UKVI.

#Spouse/Partner Visa (Initial Application)

Level required: A1 (IELTS Life Skills A1)

This is a basic Speaking and Listening test. You must demonstrate very simple English communication ability. The pass rate is high — this is not a difficult test if you have basic conversational English.

#Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

Level required: B1 (IELTS Life Skills B1)

After living in the UK for the required period (usually 5 years), you must pass Life Skills B1. Alternatively, you can submit an IELTS for UKVI result at B1 or above (4.0+ in each component). You also need to pass the Life in the UK test separately.

#British Citizenship

Level required: B1 (same as ILR)

If you passed B1 for your ILR application, you can reuse that result for citizenship (provided it is still within validity). You also need the Life in the UK test.

#What is a SELT and Why Does It Matter?

A Secure English Language Test (SELT) is a test taken at an approved centre with enhanced identity verification. The Home Office only accepts English language evidence from SELT providers for most visa applications. Currently approved SELT providers include:

  • IELTS for UKVI / Life Skills (delivered by British Council or IDP)
  • LanguageCert
  • Pearson PTE Academic UKVI
  • Trinity College London (ISE and GESE)

Standard IELTS from a regular test centre is not a SELT. This is the most common mistake applicants make — booking the wrong test and having their visa refused.

#Key Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Taking standard IELTS when you need IELTS for UKVI. The scores are identical but the Home Office will reject a non-SELT result.
  2. Assuming your university's requirement is the visa requirement. A university might ask for IELTS 7.0, but the visa requirement is only B2 (5.5). These are separate hurdles.
  3. Letting your test expire. SELT results are valid for 2 years from the test date. Plan accordingly.
  4. Not checking exemptions. If you have a degree taught in English or are from an English-speaking country, you may not need IELTS at all.
