Indigenous Fire Management
A For at least the past 60,000 years, Aboriginal Australians have used controlled fire to manage the landscapes they inhabit. The practice, known to many groups as cultural burning, involves a programme of small, low-intensity, frequently-set fires that reduce accumulated dry fuel, encourage particular food plants, and maintain a mosaic of vegetation at different stages of recovery. Until relatively recently, these practices were widely dismissed by colonial authorities as primitive or destructive. The catastrophic Australian bushfires of recent decades have, in many researchers' view, prompted substantial reconsideration, and elements of traditional Aboriginal fire management are now being formally incorporated into state and federal land-management policy. The reframing has been described as a delayed acknowledgement of the empirical sophistication of indigenous land-management practices that ecological science is only now beginning to reproduce in formal terms.
B The ecological logic of cultural burning has been thoroughly documented. Australian eucalypt woodlands, the dominant biome across much of the continent, evolved with fire as a regular ecological factor. Many native plant species are widely understood to require periodic burning to germinate; their seeds remain dormant for years and respond to the chemical cues of smoke or to heat. Frequent low-intensity fire keeps accumulated dead vegetation, called fuel load, at low levels. When fires do occur, they generally remain controllable and produce manageable damage. In landscapes where burning has been suppressed for many decades, fuel loads can rise dramatically, producing the conditions for severe wildfires that destroy soil, kill mature trees, and substantially alter ecosystem composition.
C The colonial dismissal of Aboriginal fire knowledge had, according to historians, specific consequences. The introduction of European fire-suppression doctrine in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries excluded indigenous people from much of their traditional country, while government forestry agencies adopted policies of total fire exclusion. Accumulating fuel loads, combined with progressive climate change, are widely said to have contributed to the extraordinary intensity of recent fires including the 2009 Black Saturday fires in Victoria, which killed 173 people, and the 2019-20 Black Summer fires, which burned more than 24 million hectares. The accumulating evidence has led many state agencies to revisit assumptions about fire that had been treated as settled doctrine for most of the twentieth century.
D The reintroduction of cultural burning has, in many observers' view, been gradual. The Indigenous Carbon Industry Network coordinates groups across northern Australia in carbon-credit-funded burning programmes that generate income while reducing wildfire intensity. The West Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions has formal partnerships with traditional owners on fire management in several national parks. New South Wales reformed its fire-management framework after the 2019-20 fires to give traditional knowledge a more substantial formal role. The pace of integration, however, varies widely and is widely described as contested in many jurisdictions.
E Similar reassessment has occurred elsewhere. Native American communities in California are understood to have maintained controlled-burn practices for at least 10,000 years before contact, with substantial documented effects on the California oak woodlands that European settlers reportedly later mistakenly described as natural. The 2018 Camp Fire and the 2020 Bobcat and August Complex fires were, like the Australian disasters, widely attributed partly to fuel-load accumulation under fire-exclusion policies. California state law was reformed in 2021 to make permitted prescribed burning easier, including burns conducted by Indigenous practitioners under traditional protocols. The Californian reform has been described as an analogue of the Australian shift, driven by a similar pattern of catastrophic wildfires and similar reconsideration of fire-suppression doctrine.
F The integration of indigenous and scientific approaches is not, in researchers' view, without difficulty. Different traditions reportedly describe fire ecology in different vocabularies, and translating between them is regarded as not trivial. Land tenure complicates burning across modern property boundaries that have no relation to traditional country. Climate change has shifted the conditions under which any historical fire regime was developed, raising questions about how traditional practices should adapt. The Psychology of Time Perception
A Subjective time — the rate at which time appears to pass for the conscious observer — varies dramatically depending on what one is doing. A boring meeting can feel interminable; an absorbing conversation seems over before it began. The experience of time accelerating as we age, and slowing during moments of fear, is widely said to be universal across cultures and ages. Modern psychology has begun to map the neural and cognitive mechanisms that produce these subjective time distortions, although a fully unified theory of time perception is, in many researchers' view, regarded as elusive. The field's progress has depended on the realisation that subjective time and clock time are distinct objects of study, with the former a construction of brain processes that vary considerably across contexts.
B Researchers typically distinguish several kinds of temporal experience. Duration estimation concerns judgements of how long an event lasted, generally over seconds to minutes. Temporal order concerns the perceived sequence of events, including the well-studied 100-millisecond range where the brain integrates multiple sensory streams into a single perceptual moment. Long-term time experience concerns how recent or remote past events feel and how the future is anticipated. Different brain systems are widely understood to contribute to each domain, and damage to one need not impair the others. The taxonomy has, in many writers' view, clarified earlier discussions of time perception that often conflated phenomena now treated as distinct.
C A central finding of duration research is that subjective time is, according to many psychologists, closely tied to attention. Tasks that demand attention to time generally appear longer than tasks of equal real duration where the observer's attention is absorbed elsewhere. The "vacation paradox," in which a holiday seems to pass quickly while being lived but is rich and detailed in retrospect, has been explained as a consequence of this phenomenon: a vacation produces many novel experiences that the brain encodes in detail, and so memory afterwards is widely said to expand the apparent duration, even though attention to time during the holiday itself was minimal.
D The neural substrates of temporal processing have been increasingly well characterised. The cerebellum, basal ganglia, and certain regions of the prefrontal cortex all generally show selective involvement in tasks requiring temporal judgements. Pharmacological studies have, in researchers' view, demonstrated that dopamine availability affects perceived time: drugs that enhance dopamine signalling typically cause subjective time to slow, while drugs that reduce dopamine signalling generally produce time acceleration. This is widely considered consistent with the subjective slowing of time reported by users of methamphetamine and cocaine, both of which increase dopamine activity. The dopamine-time link has, in many writers' view, broadly become a central organising principle for thinking about how pharmacology shapes the experience of duration.
E Time perception during emotionally intense experience deserves, in many psychologists' view, particular attention. People often report that time seemed to slow during car accidents, near-falls, or fights. Controlled experiments using simulated emergencies have confirmed the perception but shown that information processing during such moments is not actually faster than baseline — what changes is the encoding of memory, which records far more detail per second of subjective experience than during routine activity. The slowing is, in this view, a retrospective reconstruction rather than a real-time enhancement.
F Perhaps the most universally noted phenomenon is the apparent acceleration of time with age. A common explanation appeals to the logarithmic scaling of subjective time: a single year is one-fifth of a five-year-old's life but only one-fiftieth of a fifty-year-old's. A more recent explanation, in researchers' view, invokes the role of novelty: childhood is full of new experiences, while adulthood contains many repeated routines, and the brain is widely said to encode detailed memory primarily for novel events. The apparent shortening of recent decades is, in this view, partially an artefact of how memory weights events of differing novelty.

A For most of the modern era, scientific data collection was the preserve of professionals: trained researchers, employed by universities or government agencies, working with specialised equipment in carefully controlled conditions. Over the past two decades, however, a growing fraction of the world's scientific data has been produced not by professionals but by volunteer members of the public, working in their gardens, on long walks, or in front of home computers. The label given to this phenomenon — citizen science — is relatively recent, but the underlying tradition is widely said to stretch back many centuries: the Audubon Christmas Bird Count, founded in 1900, is regarded as among the oldest sustained citizen-science programmes in the world.
B The expansion of citizen science has been driven by three coincident developments. First, smartphones equipped with cameras, microphones, and GPS receivers have effectively given billions of people the tools needed to record scientifically useful observations. Second, online platforms — eBird for birds, iNaturalist for general biodiversity, Zooniverse for analysing scientific images, Globe at Night for measuring light pollution, and many others — generally provide structured frameworks within which observations can be aggregated, validated, and made available to professional researchers. Volunteers reportedly vary in their identification skills, in their commitment to protocols, and in the geographic and temporal coverage they can provide. Professional researchers have developed a range of methods to address this: cross-checking of doubtful records by experienced volunteers, machine-learning systems that flag unlikely identifications, transparent provenance tracking that allows analysts to filter data by source quality, and explicit incorporation of uncertainty into statistical analyses. None of these techniques completely eliminates error, but combined with the immense volume of citizen-collected data, they are widely said to have proven sufficient for many research questions.
F Citizen science is itself, in researchers' view, the subject of growing academic study. Issues of equity and representation are widely recognised concerns: citizen science volunteers worldwide reportedly skew heavily toward wealthy English-speaking countries, with implications for which regions and which species are most thoroughly observed.
