Why is "Technology underpins modern life" worth more than "Technology is very important"?
Because precision earns marks and emphasis does not. "Very important" is a judgement any candidate could write about any topic, so it shows nothing about your English. "Underpins" names the actual relationship, and naming things accurately is what Lexical Resource measures. The common mistake is to read that as a call for rarer words. It is not. A long word used loosely scores below a plain word used exactly.
What exactly cost marks in the Band 6.5 version?
Three things, and only one of them is vocabulary. "Very important" is vague, which sits under Lexical Resource. "It make" is a subject-verb agreement error and "more easier" is a double comparative, and both of those sit under Grammatical Range and Accuracy. That split matters: a candidate who assumes their problem is vocabulary will study word lists when two thirds of the damage in this sentence is grammar.
Does fixing one sentence really move your band?
One sentence on its own, no. The pattern behind it, yes. Bands are awarded on the whole script against four criteria, so what moves you is fixing the habit that produced the sentence: the vague intensifier you reach for under time pressure, or the agreement error that appears whenever the subject is separated from its verb. That is why the feedback names the criterion each fix belongs to rather than just correcting the line.
