IELTS preparation with AI, across all four modules

Most AI IELTS tools mark Writing and Speaking only, and most will not tell you how accurate their scoring is. This page covers what AI genuinely does well in IELTS preparation, what it still cannot judge, and how to build a study week around it. You can start with no account, no email and no card.

All four modules, not two

Writing, Speaking, Reading and Listening. Most AI prep tools cover Writing and Speaking because those are the ones an AI can mark without an answer key.

Free to start, nothing to sign

Paste an answer and the band comes back with no account, no email and no card. After that, 15 days is $12 as a single charge that does not renew.

An accuracy number you can check

We re-measure our scoring deviation every week and publish it with the method on the quality page, so you are not asked to take the marking on trust.

Feedback quoted from your own writing

Not advice to improve your grammar, but the exact sentence, the corrected version, and which criterion it moved.

What AI is genuinely good at in IELTS preparation

Volume and immediacy, which is precisely what IELTS rewards and what human marking cannot supply cheaply. The gap between band 6.5 and band 7 is rarely one insight; it is the same three or four habits repeated until they stop. That needs many attempts, each marked while you still remember writing it, and it needs the marking to be consistent so you can tell whether you actually improved or just got an easier question. A tutor at $100 an hour cannot give you thirty marked essays. Software can, and a consistent scorer is better than an inconsistent one for measuring your own progress even before you ask how accurate it is.

What AI still cannot judge, and why that matters

Three things, and you should be suspicious of any tool that implies otherwise. It cannot know the marking conventions a particular test centre applies on the day. It cannot hear whether your Speaking sounds rehearsed to a person, only whether it is fluent, varied and intelligible on the measurable features. And it cannot tell you that your essay is the kind of competent, safe, unmemorable writing that sits at the top of band 6 rather than the bottom of band 7, because that judgement is the one real examiners are trained for. Use AI for the measurable majority of the work and keep a human for the last half band if you can afford one.

The one question to ask any AI IELTS scorer

How accurate is it, and where is the number. This is the fastest way to sort the category, because a band score is a measurement and a measurement with no stated error is a guess with a decimal point. We looked at every well-known AI IELTS tool and read the pages ourselves. Most publish nothing. Some publish a figure with no sample size, no method and no date. We publish ours weekly with the method beside it, and we also publish what each rival does and does not state, dated and linked to the page it came from, so you can check our reading rather than believe it.

A four week IELTS study plan built around AI marking

Week one, sit a full diagnostic across all four modules in one sitting so the four bands are comparable, and read the lowest one first because that is the criterion deciding your overall. Week two, attack only that module, with a marked attempt every day and the same question type twice so you can see whether the fix held. Week three, add timed full sections for Reading and Listening, where your problem is almost never comprehension and almost always transfer and timing. Week four, stop learning and start rehearsing: full mocks under time, no feedback until the end, so test day is the fifth time you have done it rather than the first.

What to use AI for in each module

The honest answer differs by module, because what can be marked automatically differs by module. Writing and Speaking need a model to judge them against descriptors, which is where AI earns its place. Reading and Listening have fixed answer keys, so the value of software there is not the marking at all but the explanation of why the distractor was a distractor.

ModuleWhat AI marksWhat you still need
WritingAll four criteria, with the sentence that cost the mark quoted backA human read for tone and originality near band 7 and above
SpeakingFluency, vocabulary range, grammar range and pronunciation featuresLive practice with a person for interaction and the unscripted follow up
ReadingRight or wrong against the key, plus why each wrong option was written to tempt youTimed, uninterrupted full sections to fix transfer and pacing
ListeningRight or wrong against the key, plus the trap answers marked in the transcriptExposure to a range of accents at natural speed

Where AI marking adds most, module by module

Where AI IELTS preparation goes wrong

Two failure modes, and both are avoidable. The first is treating a general assistant as a scorer: a chatbot asked to mark an essay will usually be generous and inconsistent, because it is trying to be helpful rather than to apply a band descriptor, and we measured that rather than assuming it. The second is score chasing. If you submit the same essay repeatedly with small edits, you are optimising for the scorer instead of for the exam, and the number will rise while your actual band does not. Mark a new answer to a new question each time, which is why the free tier gives you a fresh question rather than a retry.

Frequently asked questions

Can you prepare for IELTS with AI alone?+

For most of the work, yes, and the honest exception is the last half band. AI gives you the volume of marked practice that actually moves a band, immediately and consistently, which is what a weekly tutor cannot. What it cannot replace is a person judging whether competent writing is memorable writing, which is the difference that often separates the top of band 6 from the bottom of band 7.

Is there a free AI IELTS preparation tool?+

This is one, and it needs no account, no email and no card to start. You get 3 writing scores and 3 speaking scores with the overall band and all four criteria, plus 2 full reading passages and 2 full listening sections with the answers explained. After that, 15 days is $12 as a single charge that does not renew.

How accurate is AI IELTS scoring?+

Ask for the number, because that is the only useful answer. We re-measure our scoring deviation every week against our reference set and publish it with the method on the quality page, so the figure can be checked rather than believed. Our reference labels are our own, which is stated there too, so you can judge what the number does and does not cover.

Does AI IELTS prep cover Reading and Listening?+

Ours does, and most do not. Writing and Speaking are the modules an AI can mark without an answer key, so a tool that only does those two is cheaper to build. Reading and Listening have fixed keys, so the useful thing software adds there is the explanation of why each wrong option was written to tempt you.

Can ChatGPT prepare me for IELTS?+

It is useful for explaining a grammar point or paraphrasing a passage, and unreliable as a scorer. A general assistant is tuned to be helpful, so it tends to mark generously and inconsistently, which is the opposite of what you need when you are trying to measure your own progress. We wrote up what we measured on a separate page.

How long does AI marking take?+

An estimate comes back while you are still on the page, and the full criterion by criterion marking in about a minute. The gap is deliberate: the quick band tells you where you stand, and the extra time buys the sentence level marking underneath it.

Is AI IELTS preparation allowed?+

Yes. It is practice material, like a book or a course, and nothing about using software to mark your practice answers affects your eligibility or your result. What matters on test day is that the writing and the speaking are yours.
