Raw Score to Band: Marks out of 40

Listening and Reading are marked out of 40 and converted with a table. The toggle only changes Reading: General Training is set harder because its texts are easier. Writing and Speaking have no raw score; they are marked on the four criteria. Boundaries are indicative and move by a mark between test versions. What each band actually means is on the band scores page.

Find your mark in the column for your paper and read the band on the left. These are the ranges the practice tests here are marked with. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band because its texts are easier, so its table is set harder. "None" means no mark out of 40 lands on that band for that paper: the two Reading tables bottom out higher than the Listening one.

How IELTS Overall Band Score is Calculated

Your IELTS overall band score is the average of your four module scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest whole or half band. For example, if your scores are L:7.0, R:6.5, W:6.0, S:7.0, your average is 6.625, which rounds to 6.5.

IELTS to CLB Conversion for Canada

The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is used in Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs. Each IELTS module maps separately to a CLB level, on its own scale. Your effective CLB is the LOWEST of your four modules, so one weak module can hold back your entire application. CLB 7, the minimum for most immigration programs, is IELTS 6.0 in every module, not Band 7. CLB 9 is Listening 8.0 with Reading, Writing and Speaking at 7.0. CLB 10 (Listening 8.5, Reading 8.0, Writing 7.5, Speaking 7.5) is where language points top out.

IELTS Points for Australia Skilled Migration

Australia's points test awards language points based on your LOWEST module score. Band 7.0+ in all four modules = "Proficient" (10 points). Band 8.0+ in all four = "Superior" (20 points). Below 7.0 in any module = "Competent" (0 points). One weak module at 6.5 means zero language points even if your other three modules are 8.5.

What Band Each Destination Asks For

An overall band only means something next to the bar you are aiming at. These are the entry-level study requirements for the 8 destinations this site tracks. A university or a case officer can ask for more than the national bar, and plenty do, so treat each line as the floor rather than the target.

  • Canada6.5 overall· University admission. 6.0 in each module (top schools want 7.0)
  • Australia6.5 overall· University admission. 6.0 each (postgrad commonly 7.0)
  • UK6.0 overall· Undergraduate. 5.5 each (Russell-Group commonly 6.5)
  • New Zealand6.0 overall· Undergraduate. 5.5 each module
  • Germany6.0 to 6.5· Bachelor (English-medium). Varies per uni; TestDaF / TOEFL also accepted
  • Ireland6.5 overall· Undergraduate. 6.0 each (Trinity / UCD often 6.5 each)
  • USANo test required· Student visa (F-1). SEVP does not regulate English level. There is no federal IELTS bar
  • NetherlandsPer institution· Student residence permit. Your institution applies for the permit and sets the language requirement

The United States and the Netherlands carry no number on purpose, and that is the accurate answer rather than a gap. SEVP does not regulate how well an international student speaks English, so no federal IELTS bar exists for an F-1 and the university sets the only one there is. In the Netherlands the institution applies for the residence permit and sets the language requirement itself. The full set of 32 study, work and settlement requirements is on the destinations page.
