The Development of Electric Vehicles

A The history of electric vehicles stretches back far further than most people generally realise. As early as 1832, the Scottish inventor Robert Anderson is widely considered to have built the first crude electric carriage, an apparatus which was powered exclusively by non-rechargeable primary cells. By the 1880s, inventors in France and England had constructed some of the first practical electric cars, and in 1891 the American William Morrison is said to have built a six-passenger electric wagon capable of reaching roughly 14 miles per hour. At the turn of the twentieth century, electric cars accounted for approximately one-third of all vehicles on American roads, and on the whole they were outselling both steam-powered and petrol-powered automobiles in several key markets.

B The early dominance of the electric automobile was largely driven by a handful of clear practical advantages. Petrol cars of the era required manual cranking to start, produced noxious fumes, and tended to generate tremendous noise. Electric cars, by contrast, usually offered quiet, smooth operation and rarely required the complicated gear-shifting mechanisms that often made early petrol vehicles difficult to drive. Women drivers in particular tended to favour electric models, and major manufacturers such as Baker Electric and Detroit Electric built thriving businesses that primarily catered to urban consumers who rarely needed to travel more than 30 miles in a single journey.

C The decline of the early electric automobile may be attributed to several converging factors. Henry Ford's introduction of the mass-produced Model T in 1908 dramatically reduced the price of petrol cars from roughly $1,500 to about $300 by 1924, while electric vehicles for the most part remained costly at $1,750 or more. Around the same time, the discovery of large petroleum reserves in Texas helped make petrol cheap and broadly available. In 1912, Charles Kettering's invention of the electric starter motor effectively did away with the dangerous hand-cranking process, eliminating one of the key advantages that electric cars had previously held. By 1935, electric vehicles had virtually disappeared from public roads.

D For the next several decades, electric vehicle development proceeded at a glacial pace, confined largely to niche industrial applications such as golf carts and warehouse forklifts. The oil crisis of 1973, which saw petroleum prices quadruple in a matter of months, briefly rekindled interest in electric alternatives, yet battery technology of the period remained inadequate for ordinary consumer vehicles. General Motors did produce a prototype known as the Electrovette in 1979, but it never advanced beyond the testing stage owing to the limited range of its zinc-nickel oxide batteries, which could power the car for only about 50 miles before requiring an eight-hour recharge.

E The modern revival of electric vehicles is said to have begun in earnest during the 1990s. California's Zero Emission Vehicle mandate of 1990 effectively obliged major automakers to develop electric models, prompting General Motors to release the EV1 in 1996. The EV1 relied on advanced lead-acid batteries and could travel up to 80 miles on a single charge. Despite attracting a devoted following among its 1,117 lessees, General Motors controversially recalled and destroyed nearly all of the EV1s by 2003, citing insufficient consumer demand. The episode was subsequently documented in the 2006 film "Who Killed the Electric Car?" and is widely credited with galvanising a new generation of electric vehicle advocates.

F The true transformation of the electric vehicle market arrived with advances in lithium-ion battery technology, which offered dramatically higher energy density than previous battery chemistries. Tesla Motors, which was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, demonstrated with its 2008 Roadster that electric cars could in some cases achieve a range of 245 miles per charge while delivering sports-car performance. The company's subsequent Model S, released in 2012, is widely reported to have earned the highest safety rating ever recorded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and was named Motor Trend's Car of the Year. By 2015, Tesla had sold over 100,000 vehicles worldwide, proving that a substantial market existed for premium electric automobiles.

G Today, the electric vehicle industry is widely regarded as standing at an inflection point. Global sales surpassed 10 million units in 2022, representing approximately 14 percent of all new car purchases worldwide. China leads the market, accounting for roughly 60 percent of global electric vehicle sales, followed by Europe at about 25 percent and the United States at around 10 percent. Battery costs have plummeted from approximately $1,100 per kilowatt-hour in 2010 to about $139 per kilowatt-hour in 2023, a decline of nearly 87 percent. Governments in more than 35 countries have announced plans to phase out internal combustion engine sales by 2040, and major automakers including Volkswagen, Ford, and General Motors have committed tens of billions of dollars to electrification programmes. Industry analysts at Bloomberg New Energy Finance project that electric vehicles will account for roughly 58 percent of global passenger vehicle sales by 2040, in their view fundamentally reshaping the transportation sector.

The Psychology of Decision Fatigue

A Every day, the average adult is estimated to make approximately 35,000 decisions, ranging from trivial choices such as what to wear to consequential ones involving career moves or financial investments. While the vast majority of these decisions are made automatically and without conscious effort, the sheer volume of deliberate choices a person faces can often lead to a measurable deterioration in the quality of those decisions over time. Psychologists have termed this phenomenon "decision fatigue," and research conducted over the past two decades suggests it may have profound implications for individuals, organisations, and public policy.

B The concept of decision fatigue is widely considered to be rooted in the broader theory of ego depletion, an idea first proposed by social psychologist Roy Baumeister in 1998. Baumeister's hypothesis held that self-control and decision-making appear to draw upon a single, limited pool of mental energy. In a landmark experiment, participants who were asked to refrain from eating freshly baked cookies subsequently tended to give up more quickly on an unsolvable puzzle than those who had not been required to exercise such restraint. The implication, according to Baumeister, was striking: the act of resisting temptation seemed to have consumed a cognitive resource that was then largely unavailable for persistence on the puzzle.

C Perhaps the most compelling real-world evidence for decision fatigue emerged from a 2011 investigation by Jonathan Levav of Stanford University and Shai Danziger of Ben-Gurion University. The researchers analysed 1,112 judicial rulings issued by eight Israeli judges over a ten-month period. They reported that the likelihood of a favourable ruling dropped from approximately 65 percent at the start of a session to nearly zero just before a scheduled break. After the judges returned from a food break, the approval rate jumped back to roughly 65 percent before declining steadily once again. The pattern, the authors note, held regardless of the severity of the crime or the prisoner's ethnicity, suggesting that mental depletion, rather than any obvious form of bias, was driving the results.

D Decision fatigue tends to manifest in several distinct ways. The first and most straightforward is impaired judgement: as mental resources dwindle, people tend to make increasingly reckless or poorly considered choices. A 2008 study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology found that shoppers who had already made numerous selections in a department store were approximately 48 percent more likely to accept the default option on a subsequent product configuration task, even when the default was financially disadvantageous. The second manifestation, commonly described in the literature, is decision avoidance, in which overwhelmed individuals simply postpone or refuse to choose at all, maintaining the status quo even when change would in theory be beneficial.

E The physiological basis of decision fatigue has been linked, at least in part, to glucose levels in the brain. A series of experiments conducted by Baumeister and his colleague Matthew Gailliot in 2007 appeared to demonstrate that acts of self-control and complex decision-making measurably reduced blood glucose concentrations. When participants were given a glucose drink between tasks, their decision-making performance recovered significantly compared to those who received a placebo. This finding suggested, in the authors' view, that decision-making is not merely a metaphorically costly activity but one that may impose genuine metabolic demands on the body.

F The commercial implications of decision fatigue are widely considered to be enormous. Retailers have long understood, whether intuitively or through formal research, that consumers tend to be more susceptible to impulse purchases when their willpower is depleted. This is often cited as the reason supermarkets place confectionery and magazines at the checkout counter, where shoppers have already navigated hundreds of product choices. Similarly, car dealerships typically present expensive optional extras toward the end of a lengthy configuration process, knowing that buyers are less likely to resist add-ons after an extended period of decision-making. A 2012 analysis by the consulting firm McKinsey estimated that decision fatigue may cost the average Fortune 500 company roughly $250 million annually through suboptimal strategic choices made in prolonged boardroom meetings.

G In the digital age, decision fatigue has, according to many observers, intensified considerably. The proliferation of online shopping platforms, social media feeds, and streaming services means that individuals are routinely confronted with an unprecedented array of choices throughout the day. Psychologist Barry Schwartz documented this phenomenon in his influential 2004 book "The Paradox of Choice," arguing that an excess of options does not necessarily liberate consumers but instead tends to paralyse them and ultimately diminishes satisfaction with whatever choice they do make. Research conducted by Columbia University professor Sheena Iyengar appeared to corroborate this view: in her famous jam study, shoppers who were offered 24 varieties of jam were only one-tenth as likely to make a purchase as those offered just 6 varieties.

H Strategies for combating decision fatigue have, in recent years, drawn considerable attention from both researchers and productivity experts. One widely recommended approach involves making important decisions early in the day, when cognitive resources are freshest. Former US President Barack Obama famously limited his wardrobe to grey and blue suits specifically to eliminate unnecessary daily decisions, a practice also adopted by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg with his signature grey T-shirts. Organisations have also implemented structural changes, such as limiting the number of agenda items in meetings to five or fewer, scheduling critical decisions for the morning, and providing nutritious snacks during long deliberation sessions. Researchers at the University of Minnesota have further demonstrated that brief periods of positive emotional experience, such as watching a short humorous video, may partially restore depleted decision-making resources, offering what they describe as a simple and accessible countermeasure to the effects of mental exhaustion.

Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature

A Biomimicry, a term derived from the Greek words "bios" meaning life and "mimesis" meaning to imitate, is described as an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions by emulating strategies found in the natural world. The term was popularised by biologist and author Janine Benyus in her seminal 1997 book "Biomimicry: Innovation is widely thought to have inspired by Nature," in which she argued that organisms have effectively been conducting research and development for some 3.8 billion years, and that the resulting designs generally represent time-tested solutions to many of the engineering challenges humans face today. Since Benyus's work appeared, biomimicry is widely regarded as having evolved into a thriving interdisciplinary field, with applications spanning architecture, medicine, transportation, and materials science.

B One of the earliest and most celebrated examples of biomimicry is commonly identified as the development of Velcro. In 1941, Swiss engineer George de Mestral returned from a hunting trip in the Alps to find burrs clinging stubbornly to his clothing and his dog's fur. Upon examining the burrs under a microscope, he discovered that they were covered in tiny hooks which latched onto the loops in fabric. It took him roughly eight years to replicate this mechanism synthetically, but by 1955 he had patented a two-strip fastening system that would in time become one of the most commercially successful inventions of the twentieth century.

C The field of aerodynamics is widely considered to have drawn particularly rich inspiration from biological systems. The design of Japan's Shinkansen bullet train provides a striking case study often cited in the literature. In the early 1990s, engineer Eiji Nakatsu was faced with the problem of the tremendous sonic boom the train produced when exiting tunnels at high speed. Nakatsu observed that the kingfisher, a bird that dives from air into water with minimal splash, possesses a uniquely streamlined beak. By redesigning the train's nose cone to mimic the kingfisher's beak geometry, Nakatsu not only eliminated the sonic boom but also reduced the train's energy consumption by approximately 15 percent and increased its top speed by roughly 10 percent.

D Architecture is sometimes described as having embraced biomimicry with remarkable creativity. The Eastgate Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, completed in 1996 and designed by architect Mick Pearce, draws its ventilation system from the thermoregulatory strategies of termite mounds. African termites, researchers have noted, generally maintain their mounds at a near-constant internal temperature through an intricate network of vents and channels which circulate air passively. Pearce's building replicates this principle using a series of fans and flues that draw cool night air through the structure's mass, storing thermal energy that is gradually released during the day. The result, by most accounts, is a building that uses 90 percent less energy for climate control than conventional buildings of similar size, saving an estimated $3.5 million in air conditioning costs over its first decade of operation.

E Medical science has largely also turned to nature for inspiration. Researchers at the University of Leeds in 2013 are reported to have developed a synthetic cartilage material modelled on the sea cucumber's dermis. Sea cucumbers can rapidly alter the stiffness of their body wall, transitioning from a soft, pliable state to rigid armour-like protection within seconds. The Leeds team replicated this behaviour by embedding cellulose nanofibrils within a polymer matrix, thereby creating a material that could shift between flexible and rigid states in response to chemical signals. According to the authors, this innovation holds significant promise for joint replacement surgery, where implants must be flexible enough to insert but sufficiently rigid to bear sustained loads.

F The study of shark skin has yielded another notable breakthrough. Shark dermal denticles — the tiny tooth-like structures covering a shark's body — generally create microscopic patterns that prevent bacteria from adhering to the surface. In 2007, materials scientist Anthony Brennan at the University of Florida developed Sharklet, a synthetic surface texture inspired by these denticles. Laboratory testing demonstrated that Sharklet reduced bacterial colonisation by up to 94 percent without using any chemical agents. Hospitals participating in a 2014 clinical trial reported a 72 percent reduction in surface-transmitted infections after installing Sharklet-coated surfaces on high-touch areas. The technology, in the authors' view, represents a significant advance in the fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

G The aerospace industry has likewise found valuable lessons in the natural world. Engineers at Airbus have studied the albatross, a bird capable of flying thousands of kilometres while expending minimal energy, in order to develop more efficient wing designs. The albatross is widely considered to achieve this efficiency through a technique called dynamic soaring, in which it exploits wind speed differences at various altitudes to maintain flight with almost no flapping. Airbus has incorporated insights from the albatross's wing structure into the A350 XWB aircraft, contributing to a 25 percent reduction in fuel consumption compared to previous-generation wide-body jets.

H Despite its widely publicised successes, biomimicry, in this writer's view, faces significant challenges. Translating biological principles into engineered systems often requires overcoming vast differences in scale, material properties, and manufacturing processes. The lotus leaf, for example, maintains a perfectly self-cleaning surface through nanoscale wax crystals, but replicating this structure on industrial surfaces at a commercially viable cost has so far proven extraordinarily difficult. Additionally, some critics argue that biomimicry can lead to oversimplified interpretations of complex biological systems, producing designs that capture only superficial features while missing the deeper functional principles which, in their view, make natural solutions truly effective.

I Nevertheless, the future of biomimicry, on balance, appears promising. The Biomimicry Institute, founded by Benyus in 2006, has catalogued more than 2,100 biological strategies in its open-access database AskNature, providing designers and engineers worldwide with a searchable resource for nature-inspired solutions. As environmental pressures intensify and demand for sustainable technologies grows, the practice of looking to nature for engineering answers, this writer would argue, is likely to become not merely an alternative design philosophy but a central pillar of twenty-first-century innovation.
