A Brief History of the Umbrella

A The umbrella is so familiar an object in modern life that few of its users typically pause to consider its long and surprisingly elevated history. The earliest surviving images of umbrellas reportedly come from ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Assyria, where reliefs and pottery from around 1200 BCE depict royal attendants holding canopies above rulers and high-ranking nobles. These early umbrellas, on the whole, had nothing to do with rain. In the hot, dry climates of the eastern Mediterranean and the Nile valley, they instead served as portable parasols, shading the heads of monarchs from the sun in what is widely described as a public display of status. In several of these societies, the right to be sheltered beneath an umbrella was reserved by law to the king and his closest relatives.

B The parasol travelled east as well as remaining in royal use along the Mediterranean. In China, archaeological evidence places collapsible silk and oiled-paper umbrellas at least as far back as the second century BCE. Chinese craftsmen are credited with pioneering both the folding bamboo frame and the use of lacquer to make paper waterproof, two innovations that would slowly migrate westward over the following thousand years. Records from the Han dynasty reportedly describe umbrellas of striking ceremonial complexity, with multiple tiers reserved for senior officials and a single tier permitted to lesser dignitaries. Buddhist art absorbed the symbolism, depicting parasols held above sacred figures in much the same way as Egyptian artists had positioned them above pharaohs.

C In Europe, the umbrella's medieval career was largely religious and decorative. Papal processions used ceremonial canopies known as ombrellinos, and a similar object features prominently in the heraldry of the Vatican to this day. For everyday Europeans, however, the umbrella as a practical accessory remained unknown. Men of rank, when caught in the rain, were expected simply to endure it; women of high station kept indoors or relied on the protection of carriages. The first significant change is said to have come in the seventeenth century, when missionaries and merchants returning from East Asia brought folding umbrellas as exotic curiosities. By the late 1600s, a handful of Parisian and London shops were offering oiled-silk umbrellas to wealthy female clients as a fashionable alternative to remaining housebound during a shower.

D The umbrella's transition from feminine accessory to universal practical item is conventionally credited to the English traveller and philanthropist Jonas Hanway, who began carrying one openly through the streets of London in the 1750s. Hanway encountered considerable mockery from passers-by and persistent abuse from coachmen, whose livelihood depended on rainy-day fares and who pelted him with mud whenever they spotted him. He persisted, however, for some thirty years, and by the time of his death in 1786 the sight of a gentleman with an umbrella had, on the whole, become unremarkable. Within a decade of Hanway's death, English manufacturers had begun producing umbrellas in significant numbers.

E Technical innovation accompanied the umbrella's growing popularity. In 1852, the inventor Samuel Fox patented the steel ribbed frame, replacing the cumbersome whalebone and split-cane skeletons that had hitherto kept umbrellas heavy and prone to breaking. Fox's frame was lighter, stronger, and far cheaper to manufacture, and umbrellas based on his design quickly displaced the older alternatives. Compact telescopic models appeared in the 1920s, and after the Second World War the substitution of synthetic nylon and polyester for silk further reduced cost and weight. A small Japanese inventor named Hiroshi Mihara is widely credited with developing in 1958 the slender folding mechanism that allowed a full-size umbrella to be carried in a handbag.

In Britain, where rainfall is frequent and unpredictable, the tightly furled black umbrella became part of the standard uniform of the City of London businessman during the twentieth century, often serving an emblematic role rather than a strictly functional one. Mediterranean beach umbrellas, Japanese paper wagasa, and the brightly coloured pavement parasols of West African markets all reportedly preserve, in different forms, the same basic function the Egyptian pharaohs once enjoyed. For an object that began as a privilege of monarchs and has ended in nearly every commuter's bag, the umbrella's history is, in many writers' view, a quietly remarkable case study in the democratisation of a once exclusive technology.

The Science of Cloud Seeding

A The idea that human beings might modify the weather has, according to many cultural historians, fascinated thinkers from antiquity to the present day. Ceremonies designed to bring rain are documented in cultures from the Hopi of the American Southwest to the rice-growing societies of East Asia. Modern attempts to alter weather, however, generally date only from the middle of the twentieth century and typically depend on a scientific understanding of cloud microphysics. The practice known as cloud seeding involves introducing tiny particles, called seeding agents, into the air with the aim of encouraging clouds to release precipitation that they might otherwise have failed to deliver.

B The conceptual foundations of cloud seeding are widely said to have been laid in the laboratories of the General Electric Research Center in Schenectady, New York, in 1946. The chemist Vincent Schaefer, working under the Nobel laureate Irving Langmuir, was studying supercooled water droplets, the liquid droplets that remain unfrozen at temperatures well below zero degrees Celsius. By accident, Schaefer dropped a piece of solid carbon dioxide, or dry ice, into a chilled chamber containing such droplets and observed that the droplets immediately crystallised into ice. His colleague Bernard Vonnegut soon showed that silver iodide, a compound whose crystal structure closely resembles that of natural ice, would have a similar effect. These two materials remain the most widely used cold-cloud seeding agents.

C The underlying physics is relatively straightforward. Many clouds in temperate and high latitudes typically contain a mixture of supercooled water droplets and ice crystals. Because the vapour pressure of water over ice is lower than over liquid water at the same temperature, water vapour preferentially deposits onto the ice rather than the droplets. The ice crystals grow at the droplets' expense, eventually becoming large enough to fall as snow. If a cloud lacks sufficient natural ice nuclei, this process, known as the Bergeron-Findeisen mechanism after the two meteorologists who described it, cannot proceed effectively. The introduction of silver iodide particles is widely said to supply artificial nuclei.

D A separate technique addresses warm clouds, in which all droplets remain above freezing. In such clouds, precipitation forms when small droplets collide and coalesce into larger ones. Seeding with hygroscopic substances, typically common salt or specialised potassium chloride flares, introduces particles that absorb water vapour, swell into large droplets, and accelerate the collision-coalescence process. Hygroscopic seeding has been used extensively in subtropical regions including South Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and parts of India.

E Despite more than seventy years of research, evaluating the effectiveness of cloud seeding has proved extraordinarily difficult. Precipitation is inherently variable, and proving that a particular shower of rain would not have occurred without intervention requires careful statistical comparison between seeded and unseeded events. Early enthusiasm was tempered by a major randomised trial conducted in Israel during the 1960s, which initially appeared to show large increases in seasonal rainfall but yielded weaker effects in subsequent decades. A recent gold-standard trial in Idaho, completed in 2020 and using cloud-penetrating radar to observe ice formation in real time, did demonstrate physically that silver iodide seeding generated snowfall that would otherwise not have occurred, although the total quantity produced is said to have represented only a small fraction of the storm's natural output.

F The economic case for cloud seeding remains debated. Estimates of cost effectiveness reportedly vary widely depending on local water prices, the type of cloud system, and the design of the seeding programme. Operators in the western United States have reported additional snowfall in mountain catchments at costs of between two and twenty US dollars per acre-foot of water, well below the typical cost of new reservoirs or desalination plants. Sceptics counter that confidence intervals around these estimates are wide and that the cumulative environmental impact of releasing silver iodide into the atmosphere has not been thoroughly characterised, even though laboratory studies broadly suggest acute toxicity is low.

G Cloud seeding has also raised legal and ethical questions. Because clouds typically move across political boundaries, seeding operations in one jurisdiction may divert moisture from another. Several treaties between neighbouring countries now regulate cross-border weather modification, although enforcement is patchy. More speculatively, some critics warn that pervasive seeding could disrupt traditional agricultural rhythms by altering the timing of rainfall. Proponents respond that the magnitude of any such effects is small compared to the natural variability of weather and to the impacts of greenhouse-gas-driven climate change.

H The future of weather modification is said to be closely intertwined with the broader challenge of adapting to a warming planet. As reservoirs shrink and aquifers decline across many arid and semi-arid regions, governments are increasingly looking to cloud seeding as one element in a portfolio of water security measures. China operates the world's largest programme, employing hundreds of aircraft and thousands of ground-based generators to seed clouds over agricultural and mountainous areas. The United Arab Emirates has invested heavily in atmospheric science to support its expanding seeding fleet. Whether such efforts will prove a meaningful response to long-term water stress depends not only on the modest physical effects achievable but also on whether complementary measures of demand management, recycling, and ecosystem restoration are pursued in parallel.

The Sociology of Social Movements

A Social movements are described as sustained, organised efforts by ordinary citizens to challenge existing institutions or to defend forms of life that they feel are under threat. Although protest and rebellion have occurred throughout recorded history, the term social movement is widely said to have entered modern academic usage only in the 1960s, when sociologists in Western Europe and North America sought theoretical tools to make sense of an unusual wave of civil rights campaigns, anti-war protests, and feminist mobilisations.

B The first generation of theorists tended to view collective protest as a symptom of social pathology. Drawing on the work of nineteenth-century crowd theorists such as Gustave Le Bon, they portrayed movements as outbreaks of irrational behaviour rooted in personal frustration, economic deprivation, or alienation. According to this so-called classical model, individuals deprived of meaningful social bonds were thought to be vulnerable to charismatic leaders and prone to demagogic appeals. The classical model offered intuitive explanations for the rise of authoritarian movements in interwar Europe but proved less convincing when applied to the orderly, often middle-class protests of the postwar decades.

C A new approach emerged in the 1970s under the banner of resource mobilisation theory. Its leading exponents, including American sociologists John McCarthy and Mayer Zald, argued that movements should be analysed as rational organisations rather than emotional crowds. Successful protest, in their view, required not merely grievances, which they noted were widespread in most societies, but resources such as money, time, professional expertise, communication infrastructure, and access to sympathetic media. Movements rose or declined in proportion to their ability to mobilise these resources.

D A complementary line of analysis, developed by Sidney Tarrow and Charles Tilly, focused on the political environment in which movements operate. Political opportunity theory holds that protest is more likely to emerge when the state appears vulnerable, when allies inside the political establishment can be cultivated, and when the costs of repression are constrained by domestic or international norms. By the same logic, movements generally decline when opportunities close. The civil rights movement in the United States, for example, is widely said to have achieved its greatest legislative successes during a period in which Cold War concerns about the country's international image made the federal government more sympathetic to claims of equal protection.

E A third tradition, often called framing theory or the cultural approach, was developed in the 1980s and 1990s by sociologists such as David Snow and Robert Benford. They argued that movements do not simply exploit pre-existing grievances but actively construct interpretations of social conditions that motivate participation. A successful collective action frame identifies a problem, attributes responsibility, and proposes a solution in terms that resonate with the prospective members' values and experiences. The same set of economic difficulties, for example, can be framed as the result of personal misfortune, of foreign competition, or of structural inequality, with very different consequences for the kinds of movement that emerge.

F The arrival of the internet and, later, of social media has prompted scholars to revisit older theories. Some commentators in the early 2000s argued that digital communication technologies had fundamentally altered the logic of protest, lowering the costs of organising and enabling sudden, leaderless mobilisations such as the Arab uprisings of 2011 or the global climate strikes of 2019. Other scholars, including Zeynep Tufekci, have responded with a more cautious assessment, noting that movements built rapidly online often lack the durable organisational capacity needed to translate street protests into lasting institutional change. Easy entry into a movement, in Tufekci's view, can be paid for in fragility once the initial enthusiasm fades.

G Comparative research has documented striking variation in how social movements behave across different national contexts. Movements in countries with corporatist welfare states, such as Germany and the Nordic nations, generally tend to be more institutionalised, with strong links to political parties and unions and a strategic preference for negotiation over confrontation. Movements in countries with more open but less unionised political systems, such as the United States, are more likely to emphasise litigation, lobbying, and high-visibility public protest. In authoritarian settings, where collective protest is risky, movements often rely on tightly knit informal networks and on tactical innovations such as flash mobilisations that disperse before the security services can respond.

H A recent strand of scholarship has explored the long-term consequences of protest. Empirical studies have found that successful social movements achieve only a portion of their immediate goals but exert substantial indirect effects on public opinion, political agendas, and the language in which subsequent debates are conducted. The civil rights movement, for example, did not eliminate racial inequality in the United States but did transform what could be publicly said about it. Some scholars argue that this long-term cultural impact is the most enduring legacy of social movements.
