Text A — KILN LANE POTTERY STUDIO: AUTUMN AND WINTER CLASSES
Kiln Lane Pottery Studio offers small-group pottery classes throughout the autumn and winter for adults and children aged 8 and over. All clay, glazes, tools and firing are included in the class fee unless otherwise stated.
Beginners' Wheel-Throwing: Tuesday evenings, 18:30 - 20:30. Eight-week course, ages 16+, £180. No previous experience required. Hand-Building Saturday: Saturday afternoons, 13:00 - 16:00. Six-week course, ages 8+ (under-12s must attend with an accompanying adult), £130. Children's accompanying adult pays a reduced fee of £40. Focus on coiling, slab-building and pinching to make small plant pots, tiles and decorative figures. No wheels are used.
Glaze and Decoration Lab: Sunday afternoons, 14:00 - 17:00. Four-week short course, ages 16+, £85. Suited to those who already have a basic clay technique. The course covers slips, oxides, underglazes, and overglaze decoration. Participants bring their own bisque-fired pieces, or purchase blanks from the studio at £3 each.
Drop-in Evening: Friday evenings, 19:00 - 21:00. Pay-as-you-go, £18 per session, no booking required. Open studio with a duty technician on hand for safety and basic guidance; not a formal lesson. Suitable only for those with prior experience.
Studio policies: - Booking is normally confirmed on payment. Cancellations made more than 14 days in advance receive a full refund minus a £10 administrative fee. Within 14 days, no refunds are given but credit notes (valid for six months) may be issued. - Classes may run during school half-terms; please check the website calendar. - The studio is closed for two weeks in late December and on bank holidays.
Text B — KILN LANE STUDIO RULES: WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
Please read the following before your first class. These rules generally exist for safety and to keep the studio pleasant for everyone.
Clothing and footwear: - Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty — clay marks are very hard to remove from delicate fabrics. - Closed-toe shoes are required for safety. Sandals, flip-flops and high heels are not permitted. - We normally provide aprons, but you may bring your own if you prefer. - Roll up long sleeves and tie back long hair before working at the wheel.
Hygiene and dust: - Dust from dry clay is hazardous when inhaled regularly. Always sponge surfaces clean rather than sweeping. Do not blow on clay; do not use compressed air. - Wash hands thoroughly before eating, drinking, or leaving the studio. - Eating and drinking are not permitted in the working areas. There is a designated café area where refreshments are welcome.
Work and storage: - Each participant is assigned a numbered shelf to store work in progress. Work left for more than six weeks after a course ends will normally be regarded as abandoned and recycled. - Firing is done by studio technicians. We do not fire any work not made on the premises, except for participants on the Glaze and Decoration Lab who may bring their own bisque pieces. - Glaze recipes are normally kept on the studio side of the kiln room. Please do not mix your own glazes without supervision.
Children and visitors: - Children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. - Visitors may observe a class only by prior arrangement with the studio.
Photography: - You are welcome to photograph your own work and personal area, but please ask before photographing other participants. Posting pictures of staff or visitors on social media requires their explicit permission.

Section 2 · Workplace Texts: Craft-Shop Apprenticeship
Text C — STITCH & STONE CRAFT SHOP: APPRENTICESHIP IN CRAFT RETAIL AND PRODUCTION
Stitch & Stone is a long-established craft shop and workshop, selling handmade ceramics, leather goods, textiles, and stationery. We are currently recruiting two apprentices for our two-year Craft Retail and Production programme, beginning in October.
The apprenticeship is a paid combined work-and-study programme. Apprentices typically spend approximately four days per week working in the shop and one day per week at the local further education college, completing the Level 3 Diploma in Creative and Cultural Industries.
What you will learn: - Sales and customer service in a specialist retail environment, including knowledge of materials, techniques, and provenance. - Basic production techniques across at least two craft disciplines, taught in rotation by our resident makers (each apprentice spends two months in each craft area during the first year). - Visual merchandising and shop-floor display, including window dressing, lighting, and seasonal themes. - Stock control, ordering, and basic accounts; introduction to the small-business side of craft retail. - Studio assistance during making sessions; safety procedures and equipment maintenance.
Pay and conditions: - Pay starts at £8.20 per hour, rising to £9.60 in the second year. The standard week is 30 hours plus one day of college study. - 25 days of paid annual leave (pro rata to working days), plus bank holidays and the period between Christmas and New Year. - The apprenticeship is conditional on attendance of college sessions; missed sessions must be made up.
Who can apply: - The minimum age is 17 at the start of the apprenticeship. There is no upper age limit. - GCSE English and Mathematics at grade 4 or above are required. Applicants without these may be accepted on condition of completing functional skills modules alongside the apprenticeship. - A genuine interest in craft is essential. Prior making experience is welcome but not required.
Application process: Send a CV, a short statement (no more than 250 words) about your interest in craft, and any examples of your own making — photographs are fine. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a half-day trial during which they would spend time with two of the resident makers and complete a small practical task.
Text D — STITCH & STONE: CODE OF CONDUCT FOR APPRENTICES
All apprentices are expected to follow the shop's general staff handbook and, in addition, the following specific guidance for the apprenticeship year.
Mentoring: - Each apprentice is normally assigned a primary mentor — a senior maker — for the duration of the apprenticeship. Mentors typically meet apprentices for a structured one-to-one of one hour every fortnight. - Mentors review the apprentice's college work and signpost professional development opportunities. Mentors are not line managers but support the apprentice's growth and report any concerns to the shop manager only where necessary. - Mentor pairings are normally reviewed at the end of months three and twelve; either party may request a change without prejudice.
Material use during the apprenticeship: - Apprentices are entitled to a generous monthly allowance of shop materials for practice work. The allowance is £40 per month in the first year and £60 in the second year, calculated at trade cost and not retail. - Practice work made using the allowance remains the apprentice's own property. However, the shop retains the right to display selected pieces (with credit) for up to twelve months in the shop window or display cases. - Production work made during paid hours, on shop materials beyond the allowance, is the property of the shop and contributes to the apprentice's portfolio.

Section 3 · General Interest: The History of Ceramics
A Ceramics — objects made from clay hardened by heat — are widely regarded as among the oldest products of human manufacture. The earliest known ceramic objects are not pots but figurines: small fired-clay representations of animals and human figures dating from approximately 28,000 years ago, found at the site of Dolní Věstonice in what is now the Czech Republic. These figurines reportedly pre-date the invention of pottery as a container by some twelve to fifteen thousand years. The making of fired-clay vessels began considerably later, and seems to have arisen independently in several different regions of the world.
B The oldest known fired-clay containers are from East Asia. Pottery fragments from the Yuchanyan Cave in southern China have been dated to around 18,000 years ago, and similar early pottery has been found in Russia and in Japan, where the Jomon culture largely produced distinctive cord-marked pots from approximately 16,500 years ago. These early vessels were hand-built — pinched, coiled or slab-formed — and fired at relatively low temperatures in open fires or simple bonfires. The use of pottery roughly coincides, in many cultures, with the transition from purely nomadic hunting and gathering to a more settled lifestyle. Whether settlement encouraged pottery, pottery encouraged settlement, or both arose together remains a subject of academic debate.
C A major technical leap was the invention of the potter's wheel, which appears in archaeological records in Mesopotamia around 4000 BCE. The wheel allowed pots to be made more quickly and with greater symmetry, transforming pottery from a primarily household craft into a workshop industry. Specialised potters could produce far more vessels in a day than a hand-builder. Within a thousand years, wheel-thrown pottery had spread throughout the ancient Near East, India and the Mediterranean. China largely developed an independent wheel tradition slightly later, around 3000 BCE, with several distinctive features including the slow turntable used for shaping coiled forms.
D Ceramics evolved differently in different regions, in part because of variations in the available clays and the firing temperatures achievable with local may fuel. In ancient Egypt and the Levant, low-fired earthenware predominated, often coated with bright glazes derived from copper and other minerals. In Greece, fine red and black painted pottery — including the famous black-figure and red-figure styles of the sixth and fifth centuries BCE — combined functional vessels with sophisticated narrative imagery, making Greek pottery widely regarded as one of the most informative sources we have for daily life and mythology of the period. In China, the development of stoneware and eventually porcelain, requiring temperatures of around 1300°C, took place independently and considerably earlier than in Europe.
E Porcelain in particular is widely regarded as one of the great inventions of Chinese material culture. True porcelain — a white, translucent, hard ceramic made from kaolin clay and fired at very high temperatures — was being largely produced in southern China by the Tang dynasty (618 - 907 CE) and largely reached extraordinary refinement during the Song and Ming dynasties. From the fourteenth century onwards Chinese porcelain was exported in vast quantities to Persia, the Islamic world, and eventually Europe. European attempts to replicate it failed for centuries; the secret was finally cracked at the Meissen factory in Saxony in 1708, after which European porcelain production developed rapidly.
F The industrialisation of ceramics in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain transformed both production methods and global trade. The Staffordshire potteries, particularly under the leadership of Josiah Wedgwood from the 1760s onwards, applied division of labour, mechanisation, and innovative marketing to ceramics production at a scale previously unimaginable. Wedgwood's creamware, jasperware, and basalt wares were sold across Europe and the Americas. The same period saw the development of bone china — a uniquely British formulation incorporating bone ash, producing a strong, translucent and relatively forgiving material that became the basis of much British tableware.
G The twentieth century saw ceramics develop in two parallel directions. Industrial ceramics expanded into entirely new uses: refractory bricks for steel furnaces, insulators for the electricity grid, heat-shield tiles for spacecraft, components for medical implants and electronics, and many advanced engineering materials. At the same time, studio pottery — the craft revival inspired in Britain by Bernard Leach and in Japan by Shoji Hamada from the 1920s onwards — re-established hand-made ceramics as a serious artistic medium. Today, ceramic art and ceramic engineering generally occupy distinct but overlapping cultural spaces. The same material that lines a furnace or shields a spacecraft may also be shaped on a kick-wheel in a small studio. Few materials have travelled so far while remaining, at heart, the same shaped and hardened earth that produced the Dolní Věstonice figurines nearly thirty thousand years ago.
